Downy woodpecker

A downy woodpecker is setting up residence in our Pyracantha.

Dave says a hole that size will probably kill the tree. But I think I like woodpeckers more than I like that Pyracantha.

Is he trying to make a nest? In October? Is there any chance he'll find a mate this late?
