Eaton Canyon

Part of Christmas in Burbank, 2005.

We ended up here after the original hike Tim and Pam had planned for us, Arcadia Canyon, turned out to be closed. Parks and trails seem to be closed a lot in LA.

But it was a lucky break. Eaton Canyon is fabulous. Upstream as you approach the waterfall, the canyon walls mimic the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado: sheer black faces crisscrossed with pink and white veins. Apparently it's not that different from the Gunnison, either: it's mica schist with granite pegmatite dikes (Geology of Eaton Canyon).

The waterfall is pretty nice, too.
