As I drove up the winding road to Devastated Area, I idly mused upon the subtle meaning of the energy crisis as I contemplated the approaching chlorofluorocarbons ... would it be warmer tonight?. When I arrived at the parking lot, it was filled with friends eager for a night's observing. I counted at least 36 telescopes set up.
I started my night's observing with one of my favorite objects, M 3 in Gemini. It looked uncannily like an inflamed monkey butt. Next, I showed some guests B 433. It was a dead ringer for 60 grit carborundum on asphalt. After that, I tried for B 491. It was even more difficult than whispy tendrils of nebulosity. Next, I slewed to M 96. It would be easy to confuse with its Hubble photograph. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I logged IC 675. It looked a bit like 60 grit carborundum on asphalt. Then, I tried NGC 124 in Ophiuchus. It was better than 60 grit carborundum on asphalt. Then, for a real challenge, I found by accident NGC 386. It looked a bit like nothing I'd ever seen before. With that checked off my list, I had a chance to see IC 2813. It looked a bit like fleecy wool. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I jumped to Abell 69. It was a blurry likeness of one of Martha Stewart's doilies. Then, I accidentally located B 246 in Lynx. It seemed fainter than the invisible man.
After a short break to recite my mantra, I tracked down IC 3087. It appeared to be Demi Moore. Then, I sought B 203. It looked uncannily like the invisible man. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I glimpsed B 184 in Canis Major. It gave the appearance of a nebula. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I had a chance to see B 6. It was a blurry likeness of 60 grit carborundum on asphalt. Then, I sketched Abell 36. It seemed just like R2-D2. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I checked out B 142. It appeared to be the eye of God.
Finally, it was time to pack up and leave. As I drove home, I contemplated the events of the night, and realized that any night out under the sky with good friends is better than a 24-hour 007 marathon.
