My observing report

As I drove up the winding road to the middle of nowhere, I idly mused upon the current state of underwater basket weaving as I contemplated the night's aurora display. When I arrived at the parking lot, it was filled with friends eager for a night's observing. I counted at least 21 telescopes set up.

I started my night's observing with one of my favorite objects, M 17. It appeared in the eyepiece like fleecy wool. Next, I went for Abell 28. It reminded me of lumpy darkness. Then, for a real challenge, I went for NGC 3426. It looked uncannily like Miss Piggy. Then, for a real challenge, I sketched B 458. It seemed almost a smoke ring. Next, I hunted IC 1476. It seemed just like its Hubble photograph.

Finally, it was time to pack up and leave. As I drove home, I contemplated the events of the night, and realized that any night out under the sky with good friends is better than spending a day at the mall with my teenage daughter.
