As I drove up the winding road to my secret observing location, I idly mused upon the subtle beauty of cosmology as I contemplated the La Nina conditions. When I arrived at the parking lot, it was filled with friends eager for a night's observing. I counted at least 3 telescopes set up.
I started my night's observing with one of my favorite objects, M 47 in Lyra. It was easy, just like a swarm of bees. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I slewed to Abell 6. It was a blurry likeness of a far-away cloud. Then, I jumped to NGC 6203. It seemed most like cotton candy. With that checked off my list, I tried NGC 2747. It appeared to be fleecy wool. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I accidentally located M 7 in Pisces Austrinus. It glowed, rather like a Black Rider hunting for Frodo.
After a short break to warm up in the car, I looked at IC 346. It was better than all the other smudges I've ever looked at. Then, I located Abell 97. It was a blurry likeness of the pillars of creation. After that, I located IC 3766. It appeared at low power like that graph in An Unpleasant Truth. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I observed NGC 4501. It reminded me of a spider. Next, I logged B 238 in Perseus. It was like Santa Claus. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I went for IC 2906. It seemed just like R2-D2. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I tried M 2. It shimmered, as if it were the clouds I'd seen earlier. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I observed NGC 1981. It glowed, rather like its Hubble photograph. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I located Abell 62. It was a blurry likeness of lumpy darkness.
Finally, it was time to pack up and leave. As I drove home, I contemplated the events of the night, and realized that any night out under the sky with good friends is better than a day out under the hot sun with bitter enemies.
