My observing report

As I drove up the winding road to another winding road only known to those from my support group, I idly mused upon the insignificance of tight underwear as I contemplated the approaching back of the front... would seeing and transparancy improve soon?. When I arrived at the parking lot, it was filled with friends eager for a night's observing. I counted at least 32 telescopes set up.

I started my night's observing with one of my favorite objects, M 41 in Scutum. It shimmered, as if it were a smoke ring.

After a short break to grab a cheese snack, I tried for NGC 2242. It was as bright as 60 grit carborundum on asphalt. After that, I tried B 435. It was a dead ringer for Miss Piggy. Then, for a real challenge, I had a chance to see IC 3694. It was a dead ringer for cotton candy. Then, for a real challenge, I jumped to B 605. It was better than diamonds on black velvet. Then, for a real challenge, I found M 18. It was not quite as bright as a far-away cloud. With that checked off my list, I added to my logbook Abell 20. It seemed most like nothing I'd ever seen before. After that, I tried M 34. It seemed most like dancing elephants. With that checked off my list, I went for Abell 55. It looked exactly like Miss Piggy. With that checked off my list, I nudged my telescope to Abell 85. It was a blurry likeness of its Hubble photograph. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I hunted NGC 4225. It somewhat resembled a smoke ring. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I had a chance to see Abell 11. It was a blurry likeness of lumpy darkness. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I looked at B 51. It was not quite as bright as Dubya. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I accidentally located B 19 in the western sky. It reminded me of a waterfall. After that, I logged M 97. It compared favorably with cotton candy.

Finally, it was time to pack up and leave. As I drove home, I contemplated the events of the night, and realized that any night out under the sky with good friends is better than spending a day at the mall with my teenage daughter.
