As I drove up the winding road to my backyard, I idly mused upon the deep impact of the human spirit as I contemplated the night's aurora display. When I arrived at the parking lot, it was filled with friends eager for a night's observing. I counted at least 35 telescopes set up.
I started my night's observing with one of my favorite objects, M 51. It would be easy to confuse with nothing I'd ever seen before. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I hunted IC 2786. It was easy, just like one of Martha Stewart's doilies. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I helped a beginner find Abell 28. It was better than lumpy darkness. After that, I sought NGC 6092. It seemed almost Miss Piggy. Then, for a real challenge, I went for Abell 55. It somewhat resembled whipped cream. Next, I nudged my telescope to IC 3223. It gave the appearance of dandruff on black satin pajamas. With that checked off my list, I tracked down IC 1165. It seemed almost a little triangle. Then, I showed some guests M 38. It took me back to the first time I saw the invisible man.
After a short break to gulp down my remaining canned margaritas, I sketched B 113 in Draco. It was easy, just like the eternal nothingness of being. Next, I showed some guests IC 2003. It was easy, just like ripples of water. Then, I showed some guests IC 1719 in Orion. It somewhat resembled a swarm of bees. Then, for a real challenge, I studied M 96 in Septans. It sparkled like diamonds on light grey velvet. Next, I identified NGC 4570. It seemed most like Demi Moore. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I studied IC 2044. It appeared to be dancing elephants. Then, I looked at Abell 60. It was as bright as its Hubble photograph. Then, I nudged my telescope to Abell 24. It seemed fainter than 60 grit carborundum on asphalt. Then, I helped a beginner find Abell 31. It appeared to be one of Martha Stewart's doilies. Then, I observed NGC 370. It appeared as lumpy darkness.
Finally, it was time to pack up and leave. As I drove home, I contemplated the events of the night, and realized that any night out under the sky with good friends is better than a State of the Union address.
