Moab to Page

Saturday was a travel day: from Moab to Page, AZ, site of Glen Canyon Dam and gateway to Lake Powell. It's also a nice place to stay -- the hotels are very reasonably priced and nice, though we have yet to find a good restaurant here.

The route traverses spectacular scenery such as Monument Valley (we didn't go in this time, having done that scene once before) and Natural Bridges National Monument (which we missed the last time, so this time we went; we were both rather disappointed, though admittedly the bridges are large and they are real bridges, not arches). We also passed near the Goosenecks of the San Juan, near Mexican Hat, but were running short on time so we didn't check it out. In retrospect I wonder if the Goosenecks might have been more interesting (prettier, anyway) than Natural Bridges. Mexican Hat itself is a fun little place; the "hat" is a balanced rock, very striking and visible from the highway, surrounded by wonderful striped rock with patterns that look like Charlie Brown's shirt. The town of the same name is tiny, but has a neat-looking tiny motel perched right on the San Juan river. Maybe some day ...

Next: Lake Powell and the Escalante Grand Staircase.
