Getting to Moab

The first few days were marathon driving sessions to get to Moab where we could start having fun. Though even that was fun, basking in our little romantic haze (which I know makes for dull reading. :-)

Once we entered Utah and hit I-70, the scenery got a lot more interesting -- canyons and cliffs everywhere. We stopped by a little roadside view area to look at the panorama, and found the perfect ring for me (silver and lapis lazuli), so now I have a nice Indian wedding ring to match the one Dave bought from the viewpoint up on Kaibab.

We got near Moab fairly early in the afternoon, so we took a detour first onto the Klondike Bluffs trail, which climbs up onto slickrock past some dinosaur footprints and eventually to the northern edge of Arches National Park. We found the dinosaur footprints but didn't continue farther. The 4Runner did great in its first excursion (with us, at least) onto anything rougher than a smooth dirt road.

Then we pulled in to Moab, checked into our hotel, and found we still had some time before dark; so we consulted the map and decided to try the Hurrah Pass trail. It was a good choice: we just barely made it to the pass (beautiful views on both sides) in time to turn around and get back down before it got dark, and it gave us a good chance to practice our 4-low driving.
