Cave Creek Ranch has an incredible network of feeders set up, and birders come from all over to watch. It was a wonderful place to stay.
The prize bird was the Elegant Trogon: supposedly one had been seen recently in the sycamores by the creek upstream from the ranch, so every hike began with a lot of staring into the trees and listening for a weird barking call. But we had no luck.
Later, we talked to a ranger who said the last one had been seen in November, and a local resident said she'd heard its call once in January. So, not really.
My total bird list for the trip: birdlist-cavecreek.
