The formations are called goblins, hoodoos, mushrooms and lots of other terms. They're formed of weathered Entrada. The Entrada consists of interbedded sandstons and siltstones, and in Goblin Valley a layer of sandstone protects columns of the softer siltstone from weathering away completely.
