The fishing rod is longer too -- two telescoping steel poles. That means that Dave can stay back from the edge, which made me less nervous about the endeavor (it's about an 800 foot drop), and means he can get the line out away from the cliff so it doesn't snag so much on rocks.
Note that he can't see the plane at all. I'm sitting about a hundred feet north along the cliff, where I can see the plane through binoculars and shout directions to Dave about which way to move.
