Here's what worked for me:

Set up ppp to the agenda

On the Agenda:
Run the network applet.
Tap on Direct Serial.

As root on the workstation: 

ws% /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS1 10.1.1.2:10.1.1.3 noauth nodetach novj debug 115200 local &

On the Agenda (still in network/direct serial):
Tap on Start.

Connection should be established. Set up an /etc/hosts entry for "10.1.1.3 agenda" on the workstation. Now you can telnet agenda.

Transfer files to the agenda

ws% rsync faile agenda::root/usr/local/bin/faile
ws% rsync Xfaile agenda::root/flash/home/default/.wmx/Games/Xfaile
