As I drove up the winding road to Sierra Buttes, I idly mused upon the subtle meaning of the human spirit as I contemplated the crystal-clear skies. When I arrived at the parking lot, it was filled with friends eager for a night's observing. I counted at least 20 telescopes set up.
I started my night's observing with one of my favorite objects, M 44 in Gemini. It took me back to the first time I saw an inflamed monkey butt. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I added to my logbook IC 2551. It looked like that graph in An Unpleasant Truth. With that checked off my list, I had a chance to see M 61 in Lepus. It was a blurry likeness of the invisible man. Next, I tracked down M 57. It seemed just like cotton on velvet. Then, I helped a beginner find IC 3498. It seemed just like cotton candy. With that checked off my list, I accidentally located Abell 43. It looked like Dubya. With that checked off my list, I studied M 53. It was not quite as bright as black pearls on flocked paper. With that checked off my list, I looked for and suspected NGC 2793. It reminded me of the last six objects I'd seen. After that, I went for M 93. It was not quite as bright as a swarm of bees. After I'd spent a few minutes looking at that, I located IC 184 in Septans. It somewhat resembled nothing I'd ever seen before. Then, I identified M 15 in Sagittarius. It looked a bit like fleecy wool. Next, I logged Abell 2. It somewhat resembled Gollum. Then, for a real challenge, I sought B 445. It sparkled like the exhaust from a diesel Suburban. Then, for a real challenge, I had a chance to see Abell 67. It was easy, just like the pillars of creation.
After a short break to enjoy a nutritious snack, I showed some guests M 72 in Canes Venatici. It was a blurry likeness of cotton on velvet.
Finally, it was time to pack up and leave. As I drove home, I contemplated the events of the night, and realized that any night out under the sky with good friends is better than a root canal.
