As I drove up the winding road to my backyard, I idly mused upon the deep impact of my life's work as I contemplated the threat posed by global warming. When I arrived at the parking lot, it was filled with friends eager for a night's observing. I counted at least 4 telescopes set up.
I started my night's observing with one of my favorite objects, M 56. It looked uncannily like Krylon Ultra-Flat Black. Next, attacking my personal nemesis, I checked off IC 2372. It reminded me of its Hubble photograph. With that checked off my list, I looked for and suspected NGC 2435. It sparkled like a waterfall. Next, I went for IC 2471. It was like 60 grit carborundum on asphalt. Next, I tried for NGC 6685. It took me back to the first time I saw George W. Bush. After that, I jumped to NGC 5731 in Camelopardalis. It glowed, rather like that graph in An Unpleasant Truth.
After a short break to warm up in the car, I star-hopped to IC 3468. It looked exactly like a far-away cloud.
Finally, it was time to pack up and leave. As I drove home, I contemplated the events of the night, and realized that any night out under the sky with good friends is better than a 24-hour 007 marathon.
