As we were driving down the hill from Abiquiu on our way back from Utah, Dave murmured "Goodbye, Piedra Lumbre." He likes the name of the Piedra Lumbre Land Grant, the area near Abiquiu named after the seemingly glowing red rocks.
But I was thinking how those red rocks marked the edge of the Colorado Plateau, that huge expanse of rock layers covering most of Utah and Arizona as well as corners of Colorado and New Mexico, and including the slickrock we'd been hiking on Comb Ridge and the sandstone on Cedar Mesa. And a song came to my mind, and I couldn't shake it.
by Akkana, to the tune of "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road"
Goodbye, Colo Plateau
Where the Wednesday Irregulars hike
Can't trap me on your slickrock
It's not all that I like
Back to the tuff and basalt
Back to the Pajarito
Oh I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the Colo Plateau
